Comfort, Accessibility, and Clinical Considerations
Comfort
The American Dive is suitable for a single adult only. It is large enough to accommodate hyperbarics for an adult and a single child; however, both are making considerable sacrifice in comfort and mobility. Most adults are unable to sit up in this size hyperbaric chamber; however, one can prop up their shoulders and neck to use a portable DVD player or device such as an iPad. Using a laptop to type and work is impractical within this unit and should be reserved for larger units such as the Grand Dive and Vertical Grand Dive portable hyperbaric chambers. For most adults, full hip flexion is possible within a 28” chamber. What is meant by hip flexion is the ability to bring your knee towards your chest. In smaller units such as the Shallow Dive hyperbaric chamber, the diameter of the chamber limits most individuals from accomplishing this. For individuals such as myself at 6’ 3”, this extra mobility is of considerable comfort and convenience over the 23” diameter Shallow Dive. Further, this increased diameter allows the shoulders to lye flat when lying on one’s back. Individuals with broad shoulders will suffer from their shoulders being pushed in towards their chest in the smaller 23” Shallow Dive.
Accessibility
The American Dive portable hyperbaric chamber may be used with a hoyer lift (crane system) to accommodate disabled patients for hyperbarics treatments. However, this hyperbaric unit has a smaller zipper opening than the Grand Dive and is not suited to accommodating larger patients. In order to accommodate such a system, the chamber must be placed on a platform to allow the legs of the lift to swing under the chamber. For more able bodied individuals, the common method of entry and egress from the chamber will be to crawl into the chamber from one’s hands and knees. A padded exercise mat placed next to the chamber helps facilitate this when the chamber is on a hard surface.
Unassisted Treatment
The 28” diameter American Dive is very suitable to operate without the assistance of another person; assuming a certain degree of flexibility in taller persons. As the Dive is 28” in diameter, most persons are unable to sit up inside this hyperbaric chamber; therefore, one must reach towards their ankles to fasten the farthest buckle and to reach the starting point of the zipper before beginning a hyperbarics session. Obviously, the larger the person and the smaller the portable chamber, the more difficult this scenario becomes. That said, once again I am 6’ 3” and I can still operate both the 28” Dive and the the 23” Shallow Dive hyperbaric chambers without the assistance of another person . Note: Trick for Single Person Operation; when using this size or smaller portable hyperbaric chamber without assistance, we recommend staging the zipper at the position of the first buckle and fastening this first buckle prior to entering the chamber. In this manner, one is not required to reach as far to secure the zippers and fasten the remaining buckles once inside the chamber. Of course, this provides a smaller opening by which one crawls into the chamber through; however with a little practice, this becomes a process which requires little thought or concern. Special Note: If you are a parent considering unassisted hyperbaric treatments with a child accompanying you; please consider the reduced space you will have when securing the zipper and buckles. It can be accomplished, but the difficulty may ultimately lead to poor adherence to a specific hyperbaric therapy protocol recommended by your physician
Clinical Considerations
This American Dive is only recommended as an in-home rental option for patients and is not recommended for those considering usage within a clinic. The smaller chamber size limits the treatment of patients requiring a guardian and prevents couples who would prefer to undergo hyperbarics together from enjoying such luxury (keep in mind that wellness and anti-aging are fast growing markets for mild hyperbarics). Although this chamber is considerably less expensive than the larger 40” x 10’ Grand Dive, consider the lost revenue from the above populations. Over time, the Grand Dive (our primary recommendation for most clinics) will have been a far superior investment as a primary hyperbaric chamber. This is not to say that many offices have not successfully integrated mild hyperbaric therapy into their office utilizing this size model; it is merely to state that our recommendation for the widest application is either the Grand Dive or Vertical Grand Dive
