Comfort, Accessibility, and Clinical Considerations
Comfort
The Grand Dive is likely the most comfortable unit in our line of portable hyperbaric chambers for multi-person treatments. It is large enough to accommodate two adults sitting up at opposite ends with their feet stretched out towards the center; further, a child may comfortably accompany those two adults in most cases. Of course, it should go without saying that an adult could accompany two children; we have even had single a single adult accompany three children ages 7 and 8 (twin boys and a girl). The largest concern regarding comfort for multi-person hyperbaric treatments is heat accumulation from the body heat and humidity generated from each additional person. Although a lot can be accomplished through controlling the temperature and humidity of the room, using an inline cooling system for the air compressors, and careful consideration of the garments one wears; there is a point at which too much body heat in a confined area builds up beyond the control of the users. Resulting in a less than comfortable hyperbarics session.
Accessibility
The Grand Dive portable hyperbaric chamber may be used with a hoyer lift (crane system) to accommodate disabled patients undergoing hyperbarics. In order to accommodate such a system, the hyperbaric chamber must be placed on a platform to allow the legs of the lift system to swing underneath the chamber. For more able bodied individuals, the common method of entry and egress from the hyperbaric chamber will be to crawl into the chamber from one’s hands and knees. A padded exercise mat placed next to the chamber helps facilitate this when the chamber is on a hard surface. Special Note: In the past, we have assisted quadriplegic patients into the Grand Dive without the aid of a crane system. To do this, we would place a bed sheet under the patient while seated in a wheel chair. Then, two of us would pick up the patient (one gripping the sheet from under the knees, the other gripping from above the shoulders) and lift them to the exercise mat next to the front of the chamber. Then, we would each step one leg into the chamber and make a second lift, placing the patient into the hyperbaric chamber. We would then adjust the patient for comfort and assist a guardian if need be. Of course the limitations of this system are the weight of the patient and the strength of those assisting in the lift. I share this scenario because it is proof that almost any single person can be assisted into a Grand Dive for hyperbaric therapy if enough care and consideration is given.
Unassisted Treatment
The Grand Dive and the Vertical Grand Dive are by far the easiest portable hyperbaric oxygen chambers on the market to operate without the assistance of another person. As the Grand Dive is 40” in diameter, most persons can sit up cross-legged without needing to arch their back or neck when the chamber is fully inflated and/or pressurized. Note: I am 6’ 3” and I can just feel my hair rubbing on the top of the chamber when I sit up completely. This of of tremendous benefit when securing and unsecuring the zippers and buckles at the beginning and end of the treatment session. With the ability to sit up, an individual can simply pull the zippers across their body and fasten the buckles which are hanging in front of them. In the smaller horizontal portable hyperbaric chamber models (Dive 28” and Shallow Dive 23”), unless a person is of small enough stature to sit up, one must reach towards their ankles to fasten the farthest buckle and to reach the starting point of the zipper. Obviously, the larger the person and the smaller the chamber, the more difficult this scenario becomes when undergoing a hyperbarics session unassisted. That said, once again I am 6’ 3” and I can still operate the 23” Shallow Dive without the assistance of another person (see notes on those mild hyperbaric chambers for further details and tips on how to operate without assistance)
Clinical Considerations
The Grand Dive is our #1 recommendation for those considering integrating mild hyperbaric therapy into a clinic. It will accommodate the largest variety of patients and allows single persons to lye down and relax completely, even sleep (the most popular activity engaged in during hyperbarics). Further, the larger size helps combat the fear of claustrophobia in individuals where this is a real concern. A smaller portable hyperbaric oxygen chamber such as the 28” Dive limits the treatment of patients requiring a guardian and prevents couples who would prefer to undergo hyperbaric therapy together from enjoying such luxury (keep in mind that wellness and anti-aging are fast growing markets for mild hyperbaric therapy). Although this chamber is of considerable investment over the 28” Dive, consider the lost revenue from the above populations. Over time, the Grand Dive will have been a far superior investment.
