Comfort, Accessibility, and Clinical Considerations
Comfort
The Shallow Dive model mild hyperbaric chamber is suitable for a single person only. It is large enough to accommodate an adult of petite stature and a very young child; however, both are making considerable sacrifice in comfort and mobility. Adults are unable to sit up in this size chamber; however, smaller stature adults can prop up their shoulders and neck to use a handheld DVD player or device such as an iPad. Using a laptop to type and work is impractical within this unit and should be reserved for larger units such as the Grand Dive and Vertical Grand Dive. For most adults, full hip flexion is impossible within a 23” hyperbaric chamber. What is meant by hip flexion is the ability to bring your knee towards your chest. For individuals such as myself at 6’ 3”, this decreased mobility is of considerable loss in comfort and accessibility over the 28” and 40” diameter hyperbaric chambers. Further, this decreased diameter causes the shoulders to be pushed in towards the chest on larger individuals. This can restrict chest expansion and greatly decrease comfort in those with broader shoulders. For children that are capable of undergoing treatment without a guardian inside the chamber; this is a very affordable option for in-home hyperbarics. However, keep in mind that children grow extremely fast and they may grow out of the unit in a matter of years as they move into their teens.
Accessibility
It is impractical to utilize the Shallow Dive mild hyperbaric chamber with a hoyer lift (crane system); any patient small enough to place into the chamber in this manner is likely light enough to be picked up without the assistance of a lift. For more able bodied individuals, the common method of entry and egress from the chamber will be to crawl into the chamber from one’s hands and knees. A padded exercise mat placed next to the chamber helps facilitate a comfortable entry when the chamber is located on a hard surface.
Unassisted Treatment
The 23” diameter Shallow Dive can be difficult to operate unassisted via larger individuals; however, a large portion of the population is capable of such operation; assuming a certain degree of flexibility in taller persons. As the Shallow Dive is 23” in diameter, excepting small children, most persons are unable to sit up inside this chamber; therefore, one must reach towards their ankles to fasten the farthest buckle and to reach the starting point of the zipper before beginning a hyperbarics session. Obviously, the larger the person and the smaller the hyperbaric chamber, the more difficult this scenario becomes. That said, once again I am 6’ 3” tall and I can still operate both the 28” Dive and the the 23” Shallow Dive without the assistance of another person . Note: Trick for Single Person Operation; when using this size of chamber without assistance, we recommend staging the zipper at the position of the first buckle and fastening this first buckle prior to entering the device. In this manner, one is not required to reach as far to secure the zippers and fasten the remaining buckles once inside the hyperbaric chamber. Of course, this provides a smaller opening by which one crawls into the chamber through; however with a little practice, this becomes a process which requires little thought or concern when undergoing personal hyperbaric therapy sessions. Special Note: If you are a parent considering unassisted hyperbaric treatment and a child will accompany you; please consider the reduced space you will have when securing the zipper and buckles. It can be accomplished, but the difficulty may ultimately lead to poor adherence to a specific hyperbaric therapy protocol recommended by your physician
Clinical Considerations
The Shallow Dive is suitable as a secondary chamber or as an in-home rental option for patients; however, it is not our recommendation for those considering usage within a clinic. The smaller chamber size limits the treatment of patients requiring a guardian and prevents couples who would prefer to undergo treatment together from enjoying such luxury (keep in mind that wellness and anti-aging are fast growing markets for mild hyperbaric). Although this chamber is considerably less expensive than the larger 40” x 10’ Grand Dive, consider the lost revenue from the above populations. Over time, the Grand Dive will prove to be a far superior investment as a primary a primary treatment option. This is not to say that many offices have not successfully integrated mild hyperbaric therapy into their office utilizing this size model; it is merely to state that our recommendation for the widest application is either the Grand Dive or Vertical Grand Dive
